Ahhhh, Valentine's Day. A celebration of LOVE and commitment. A special day dedicated to expressing affection to your loved ones. Did you know that there is only speculation on how Valentines Day began? Some say that it originated from a Roman Festival called "Lupercalia".
"Lupercalia" was a Roman festival marking the onset of spring and celebrating fertility. The festivities included animal sacrifices, drunken merrymaking, and the pairing of men and women. Some consider Lupercalia to be the forerunner of Valentine's Day. In the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I banned Lupercalia.
Another theory traces back to St. Valentine, a Christian priest who might have been executed by Roman Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. He is thought to have secretly conducted marriages for young couples, going against the emperor's orders. According to legend, while imprisoned, he wrote a letter to a young girl he loved, signing it "From your Valentine". It is believed that the church might have transformed Lupercalia into a Christian celebration to honor St. Valentine. Valentine's Day did not become a formal celebration of love until the 14th century, when King Henry VIII of England declared February 14 a holiday in 1537.
