Let's talk about contracts.
Why is having a contractual agreement with your breeder important?
A contract with a breeder is essential because it outlines the responsibilities of both the buyer and the breeder. This ensures the puppy's health and well-being by specifying details like health guarantees, vaccination records, and what should happen if the buyer can no longer care for the dog. It may also outline if their is legal recourse if either party fails to meet their obligations; essentially protecting both parties from misunderstandings and potential disputes.
When entering into an agreement with a breeder, it is vital that you thoroughly review all of the contents of the contract prior to signing. A few key things that we have included in our contract are:
-A spay/neuter agreement: We generally do not provide breeding rights and mandate that all our puppies be spayed or neutered between 6 months and 1 year of age.
-Well puppy check: We ask that our puppies visit a Veterinarian within 5 to 7 days of arriving at their forever home. This step safeguards both the breeder, by confirming the puppy's health upon their arrival, and the owner. Should any issues be detected within that period, we can support the new owner.
-Pet Insurance: Pet insurance is invaluable for both owners and their puppies. We've discovered that the modest expense of pet insurance has been beneficial for our owners during significant incidents. For instance, we had a puppy that got injured while climbing a small fence. This incident could have cost the owner thousands of dollars, but instead, it only amounted to a few hundred.
In conclusion, I urge you to thoroughly review all the literature provided before purchasing your puppy. If there is no agreement for you to sign, RUN! You need a breeder who cares enough about their puppies to implement safeguards to protect them.
